 Food

In Germany, you can expect to eat great meals. Unfortunately, many people think all there is to German food are pretzels and sausages, the typical food eaten in America. Well, here is some of the food you should try while in Germany.

A typical German breakfast could consist of rolls with jam and spreads, or cold and hot cereals which are also common. You can drink coffee, tea or milk.

A typical German lunch could consist of a soup, main entre, and a small dessert.

A typical German dinner could consist of a light sandwich, but usually for heavier, more filling dinners, you could expect to enjoy some of the dishes below.

1. Schweinshaxe

Schweinshaxe, roasted ham hocks, is a very popular food, especially during the Oktoberfest season. It is usually served with potatoes, sauerkraut, vegetables, and beer. It is usually eaten for dinner. Germans like to use all parts of animals, so pork hocks are common in this country!

2. Schnitzel

Schnitzel is Germany's "National Specialty", consisting of a piece of chicken, pork or veal that is flattened, breaded, and fried. It is basically a flat chicken tender if used with chicken. And it's a fairly cheap dish too! Schnitzel can be eaten for lunch or dinner, but is typically for dinner. The animals in this dish are produced in Germany.

3. Fish

Fish dishes in Germany are not your average fish fry or fish sticks. These dishes are very elegant, because the fish are usually smoked trout, eel, herring, and North Sea Shrimp. Fish is considered a delicacy, and if you really want to see all the fish Germany has to offer, visit the popular Hamburg Fish Market on Sunday mornings. Though fish is usually eaten for dinner, you can eat it for most meals, as it is so popular. Fish can commonly be found and fished in Germany.
